Laser Resurfacing for Stretch Marks Removal

One option to remove or greatly lessen the appearance of stretch marks is laser surgery. While the word ‘surgery’ sounds ominous, it’s really a very simple treatment and side effects are rare.

The procedure itself consists of a concentrated beam of light that travels along the stretch marks, removing extraordinarily thin layers of skin. As the layers are removed, the scar tissue that causes the stretch marks is also removed. After treatment, the skin immediately begins to heal itself and new skin is formed over the damaged tissue.

Treatments can last anywhere from ten minutes to an hour, depending on the severity of the stretch marks and the area of skin that is affected. You can expect to return for a series of treatments; from two to six sessions can be required. During the procedure, the only pain you should experience is a pinching or needling sensation, as the light lasers do their work.

The pulse dye laser (V-Beam laser) is an effective modality in the treatment of fresh and red stretch marks. A new resurfacing procedure, named fractional resurfacing or Fraxel affords a new solution for the treatment of stretch marks. This laser resurfaces the skin gradually, 20-30% at a time, which allows for rapid healing while eliminating the risk of rawness associated with traditional laser resurfacing procedures. This laser procedure is extremely safe to be used on any body surface area.

VBEAM laser

Vbeam is a pulsed dye laser that is used to treat the red color of the stretch marks. The procedure is comfortable and require no down time. Patients will feel a sensation of a rubber band snap combined with a cool burst of air. After the treatment, the skin will be red with some localized swelling that is typically gone by the next day. Treatments are done monthly. Vbeam may be combined with other lasers such as the Fraxel.


FRAXEL laser

The Fraxel laser is the most effective treatment for stretch marks available today. Using Fraxel, collagen and elastin synthesis can be stimulated while resurfacing about 20% of your skin’s surface with each treatment. After a series of FRAXEL treatments one will see improvement in the texture, diameter and depth of the stretch marks. If the stretch marks are red, the Vbeam laser should be used in combination with Fraxel.

The Fraxel laser treatment requires a topical anesthetic beforehand. During the treatment, the hand piece is gently guided across the skin like an airbrush painting your skin with micro-treatments beneath the surface of your skin. Treatments normally take about 20-25 minutes. The redness that is noticed after treatment dissipates within a few days. No downtime is required when Fraxel is used on the skin of the body.

Patients typically will need 4-5 treatments with this laser procedure for the treatment of stretch marks. Patients can expect improvement in the quality and texture of their stretch marks. However it is important to note that you can not fully eradicate stretch marks with any currently available modalities. Fractional resurfacing is performed under local numbing after application of a numbing cream for one hour.

Resurfacing is achieved by peeling away a layer of skin while causing tissue contraction. Although this modality achieves dramatic results, candidates often undergo general anesthesia and prolonged healing and recovery times (as long as two weeks).

• Treat Stretch Marks Early
